Notes

  • [a] Rosselli indexes this family by Maestro Domenico's patronym, but we have no evidence it was ever used as a surname.
  • [b] Though used in the secondary literature, the surname dal Pozzo Toscanelli was not used by Maestro Domenico di Piero medico. The name comes from their neighborhood where there was a "Pozzo dei Toscanelli." The moniker was adopted by more than one family, and it is unclear when this family of doctors began to use it or the shorter "Toscanelli." See Pietro Gori, Paolo dal Pozzo Toscanelli (1898), 6.
  • [c] Rosselli's notes do not make clear whether the tomb was conceded by or to the Toscanelli, but the tomb of their patriarch Maestro Domenico di Piero medico was adjacent to the Benozzi tomb.
  • [d] Maestro Domenico di Piero medico filed his 1427 catasto declaration from this gonfalone saying his house faced via di Piazza. A biography of his son by Pietro Gori (see above) says that they lived near the Canto Quattro Leoni between via Guicciardini (formerly via di Piazza) and via Velluti.
