[a] Don Pedro was marquis consort of Villafranca del Bierzo and from 1532 to 1553 was viceroy of Naples on behalf of Charles V of Habsburg . On his way to Siena on diplomatic mission, poor health worsened, and he was transported to Florence, where he died on 22 February 22 1553. He had built a tomb for himself in the church of San Giacomo degli Spagnoli in Naples, but it remained empty. He was instead buried in the Florence Cahtedral in a tomb in the tribune, which was moved to make way for reliefs by Baccio Bandinelli, in turn dismantled in the nineteenth century. His wooden cenotaph was near the door that opens onto via Ricasoli, also removed in the nineteenth century.
