Manovelli, Giovanni di Tedice

Description

Giovanni di Tedice Manovelli was one of several citizens found guilty of taking bribes in connection with the scrutiny of 1361. Even so, four of his thirteen offices came after this conviction. Interestingly, at least two tombs in Florence carried his name. A slab in his parish church of Santa Maria Maggiore was installed just inside the main door, and his son Terrino commissioned a statue of the Virgin to adorn the wall above it. Another tomb in the crypt of Santa Maria Novella was set aside for Giovanni and his sons. Consultation of the Books of the Dead may resolve where father and son were buried.
