Notes

  • [a] Though the tomb slab honoring the brothers Zanobi and Cristoforo di Berto Carnesecchi was not installed until 1436, the two men likely had secured a burial site in Santa Maria Maggiore, where their family would come to have three chapels and several tombs, including that of their second cousin Luca di ser Filippo, whose inscription carried the date January 24th, 1402.
  • [b] Despite the tomb's date of 1436, the inscription uses a Gothic style of lettering more associated with the fourteenth century. It is possible that the tomb's patrons, likely the sons of the two brothers honored in the inscription, wanted the tomb to appear more ancient than it was. Family age was an important indicator of status in Florentine society.
