Notes

  • [a] Giovanni was sent to Rome as ambassador to the Vatican to congratulate Pope Paul II on his elevation to the chair of St. Peter. The pope knighted him at this time and later gave him permission to add the papal keys to his coat of arms.
  • [b] Canigiani arms with the papal keys adorned the altar step of the family chapel in San Francesco al Monte alongside those of the Miniati family. The identity of Giovanni's wife would confirm whether he was in fact the chapel's patron.
  • [c] At some point after 1439 or so, Giovanni moved his family to via de'Bardi, eventually purchasing a palace from Lorenzo di Larione Bardi in 1467.
