Notes

  • [a] This tomb provides a rare example of a burial space endowed and used by friends, rather than only kinfolk. Andrea Bartolotti and Giovanni Lapi di Cantina were colleagues at the court of Grand Duke Cosimo II de'Medici, the former serving as his "bottle man" and the later as the duke's keeper of the canteen. The tomb they decorated with their coats of arms had been left vacant at the extinction of the Orpellai family around 1590. The tomb, acquired in July 1610, carried an inscription that not only mentions their friendship, but also poetically states that their hearts and bones were enclosed within the tomb together, along with those of their descendants.
