S. Giovanni Evangelista

According to Stefano Rosselli, a hospital (spedale) near Santa Reparata and the Baptistery was dedicated to St. John the Evangelist. It was torn down in 1296 as part of the project to rebuild the cathedral and enlarge the piazza between it and the baptistery of San Giovanni Battista. Moved to the area opposite San Lorenzo and would become the Medici palace, the small church was under the patronage of the Gori Ciampelli and Rondinelli families in the later fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Cosimo I gave the church to a community of Jesuits in 1557, and plans to remodel the church were drawn up by ducal architect Bartolommeo Ammannati in 1579. The new church progressed slowly, complete only in 1661.
