Stefano Rosselli offers a brief history of this church and monastery founded by Camaldolese hermits in 1102, which lead to the surrounding area being called "Camaldoli." In 1530 it became the temporary home of the nuns of S. Giovanni Gerosolimitano (the Cavalieresse di Malta) after the destruction of their convent outside the S. Piero Gattolini gate. They moved to their new home in via San Gallo in 1552. The Camaldoli convent housed other groups, and the church was used for storage of processional floats and carts like the Carro de Pazzi burned on Holy Saturday and those used for the feast of S. Giovanni, thus giving the church the nickname S. Giovannino delle Carra. In 1625 it became a mendicant hospital. It seems that Rosselli was unable to visit the church in the 1650s, but he recalled from his youth seeing altars, painted altarpieces, and tombs, including an effigy belonging to the Dati family.
