Notes

  • [a] Seven monks and four lay-brothers from the Camaldolese convent of Santa Maria degli Angeli established a new convent just outside the city walls at the Pinti Gate (Porta a Pinti). Funds to establish a new monastery came from the testament of Francesco di Jacopo Ricci, whose brother don Alessandro was one of the church founders.
  • [b] The church was ready for new chapels and decoration by 1402.
  • [c] The monastery was deliberately destroyed in advance of the Siege of Florence, along with several other extra-mural churches, as a defensive measure. The planned demolition allowed works of art to be saved and removed to the mother Camaldolese house of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
