[a] A document of 1066 notes the church of San Martino in Guatolongo in the Kinzica district of Pisa. It belonged to the Canons of Pisa Cathedral by 1076.
[b] The Pisan Canons gave the church to a group of clergy following the rule of St. Augustine.
[c] A new and larger church was built on the site with financial support from Bonifaccio Novello della Gherardesca, Count of Donoratico, who added convent buildings for a community of Poor Clares. At this time, the church oversaw the most populous parish in Pisa.
[d] A separate space in the church was built to accommodate the nuns' desire to remain in clausura while worshipping in the church, accessed directly from convent.
[e] The church was reconsecrated by Bishop Zaccaria Palmieri on May 12th, 1477.
[f] The church was significantly remodeled in the Baroque style.
