Notes

  • [a] The original convent was located outside the Porta San Niccolò, built on the site of a hermitage established by a rich merchant named Deodato around 1200, which then hosted the first group of Dominican friars to come to the region, followed by the first group of Franciscans. Once the Franciscans abandoned the romitorio, it was converted into a convent for the first community of Dominican nuns in the area. The nuns would also eventually leave the site, with one group going to a convent dedicated to San Domenico, and the other named after the Pian di Ripoli from whence the women came. It was this church, established by 1292 in via della Scala, that would be home to the nuns until its suppression in 1784.
  • [b] In 1476, two Dominican friars, Fra Domenico da Pistoia and Fra Pietro da Pisa, established a printing press at the convent.
