[a] A Benedictine convent was established in the area north of the city walls known as Cafaggio through a bequest from Niccolò Gianfigliazzi.
[b] Deemed too small, the convent was rebuilt by Lelmo Balducci to fill the corner at via del Cocomero (now Ricasoli) and via del Ciliegio (now Alfani). It abutted the hospital of San Matteo, also built by Balducci.
[c] The convent was later converted into various civic spaces including the Opificio delle pietre dure, the Accademia di belle arti (also in the former hospital of San Matteo), and an auditorium.
