SS. Annunziata 194 1289

Notes

  • [a] discrepancies in manuscript copies and editions of Giovanni Villani's chronicle have led to confusion over the family of the Frenchman Gulielmus (Guglielmo, Guillaume, William), "balius" (literally bailiff, loosely translated as seneschal, lieutenant, advisor, or counselor) to Captain Amerigo de Nerbona, died at Battle of Campaldino 1289 and buried in SS. Annunziata, Florence. Unclear whether Durfort is simply his toponym or was used as a family name; also unclear whether he had any relation to the famous Dufort family, but the coat of arms on his tomb (two wheels/millstones displayed as a vertical pair) is not theirs.
