The goldsmith Francesco, son of Vanni, commissioned a tomb for himself and his family in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine, the Carmelite friary located in his residential district of Santo Spirito Drago. On it he used his occupational name Franciscus Vannis Aurifex (Francesco di Vanni orafo). In 1378, Francesco entered the election scrutiny under the name Franciscus Vannis de Calicibus, a surname he adopted from his reputation as a maker of chalices, and he was elected prior for the first time in May 1381. His name was placed again in the 1381 purses, from which he was selected three more times for the Priorate, Twelve, and Sixteen. Francesco's adoption of a surname may have been to avoid confusion with another goldsmith of the same name from the Santa Croce Carro district, who was elected to the Tre Maggiori three times from the 1381 purse. We can thus surmise that Francesco di Vanni Calici commissioned his tomb prior to 1378 when he was primarily using his occupational name; his coat of arms bearing an uprooted tree rather than the chalice of his adopted surname or other occupational signs.
