Though he worked as a professional painter and manuscript illuminator, Zanobi Strozzi never joined the painters' guild, which was part of the Arte dei Medici e Speziali. Mirella Levi d'Ancona and others speculate this lack of guild participation was due to his membership in the Strozzi family, many of whom were exiled by the Medici in 1434. Also of note is the fact that his father died when he was only seven years old in 1419. He was still a minor living with his brother Francesco in 1427.
