Guidotti, Bindo (monsignor) di Bindone di Guidotto (Ferrucci, vescovo di Fiesole)

Description

A great deal of confusion surrounds the identity of Bishop Bindo. He has been found in documents as "dominus Bindus quondam Bindonis Guidotti de Florentia" (1413, see Passerini 1853, p. 628); "reverendi domini Bindi de Rustichellis" (ca. 1421, see Arrighi); and "Bindus (Ferrucci) al. Guido de Florentia" (see Eubel 1913, p. 249). The Rustichelli of Fiesole and the Guidotti of Florence were kinsmen, while the Ferrucci of Fiesole claimed descent from the Guidotti and believed the Bishop to be among their antecedents. A tomb in Fiesole Cathedral honored him as of the Ferrucci family.

Notes

  • [a] Vanna Arrighi gives the date of August 31st, 1421 for the bishop's death. However, the Hierarchia Catholica medii aevi... (1: 249) records that he was appointed bishop on August 31st, 1411, and gives neither month nor day for his death in 1421, though it was certainly before November 17th, the appointment date of his successor.
  • [b] According to Vanna Arrighi, Bishop Bindo Rustichelli (Guidotti or Ferrucci) was buried in the cathedral in August 1421, what is unclear is whether he was placed in the grave refurbished in 1589 by Battista Mattia Ferrucci, who believed himself to be one of Bindo's descendants.
