[a] In Book 9, chapter 108 of his Cronica, Matteo Villani recounts how conte Tano de' conti Alberti, an enemy of Florence because of his alliance with Milan, was beheaded on September 14, 1360, the feast of the Holy Cross. An Ubaldini nobleman was also executed, while fourteen additional outlawed rebels were dragged through the streets and hanged. The Ubaldini nobleman was returned to his family for burial, while Tano was placed in an unmarked grave in the left transept of Santa Croce.
[b] The castello di Montecarelli, long in the possession of the conti Alberti di Prato and Cadolingi families, was owned by conte Tano from at least 1330.
