Notes

  • [a] The mathematician Vincenzo Viiviani left funds in his will to build a tomb for himself and the ashes of his teacher Galileo Galilei, whose remains were in a deposit in a small room near the novitiate of Santa Croce. The project was not completed until 1737.
  • [b] Vincenzo Viviani entrusted Giovanni Battista Nelli to carry out his wishes to install a tomb for himself and his mentor Galileo Galilei in the church of Santa Croce. Nelli died before accomplishing this request, and Viviani's estate passed to his son Giovanni Battista Clemente once he installed the tomb, which he did in 1737.
