This tomb's honoree is most likely the lawyer messer Raniero di Marchisello da Villanuova catalogued by Giuseppe Mastursi as no. 3670. He was active from 1315 to 1347 and had three known brothers. His brother Niccolò was also a lawyer (Mastursi no. 3647); Mari, a notary (no. 2331); and Lando, a rector in the church of S. Jacopo da Villanuova. Biographical information should be taken cautiously since it is possible, though unlikely, that there were multiple messers Raniero da Villanuova in fourteenth-century Florence.
