[a] Joseph had been elected Metropolitan of Ephesus in 1393 after which he was promoted to Patriarch of Constantinople. He died in office while attending the Council of Florence.
[b] Patriarch Joseph II died on June 1, 1439, it is not known when his tomb was installed, but by the late 16th century it carried the date June 1, 1440.
