Boscoli, Neri di Gherardo di Tingo

Description

Neither the Carte Dei nor the Passerini archive indicate how Neri, or Nero, di Gherardo di Tingo Boscoli connected to the other branches of the family. After setting up a tomb in Santa Croce, it seems his bones were transferred to the family tomb in the Badia. It is possible that he was never actually buried in Santa Croce. That tomb had certainly been conceded to two brothers, the sons of Sandro, by 1439.

Notes

  • [a] The necrology of the Badia Fiorentina, which records deaths starting from 2 May 1499, includes the following notation in the family index for the Boscoli (fol. 123v): "1409: Signore Nero del Signore Gherardo Boscoli." A reference to an annual mass in his honor is found in the same volume under February 13, suggesting this is his date of death. The requirement for this mass, and the bequest of five florins to pay for it, can be found in ASFi, Corporazioni Religiosi Soppresse dal Governo Francese, 78, 386, fol. 8v as cited in Sergio Tognetti, Osservanza e partita doppia. La contabilità della Badia fiorentina nel primo Rinascimento (Florence: EDIFIR, 2023), 48n4.
  • [b] Given that Neri's tomb in the cloister of Santa Croce was conceded to another family by 1439, it is possible that he was buried, or later reburied, in the family tomb at the Badia considering that he left a bequest requiring the monks to say an annual anniversary mass on 13 February for him and his ancestors. His connection to the other Boscoli associated with the chapel and tomb remains unclear.
  • [c] While Neri is noted as having rights to a tomb in the cloister of Santa Croce, it was conceded to another family by 1439. He also left a bequest to the Boscoli family chapel in the Badia Fiorentina, raising the possibility that he was buried there instead. He requested masses to be said on January 13 at both churches.
