Giubbolesi, Tellino di Dino

Description

Tellino di Dino was a new man (gente nuova) who achieved wealth and status through work and government service rather than inheritance. He was a member of the Ricci faction (Brucker 1962, p. 235n164), and like his co-partisan Sandro di Simone da Quarata, he endowed a chapel at the Camaldolese monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli even though he chose burial elsewhere (S. Maria Novella). While he is listed in the Priorista Mariani under the surname Giubbolesi (and also in the Ceramelli Papiani archive), his descendants seem to have adopted the name Dini. Tellino seems never to have used a surname, though he does appear in the scrutiny of 1344 as Tellinus Dini Giubbolesi, which may mean his grandfather was called Giubbolese.

Notes

  • [a] The Priorista Mariani notes that Tellino was in the scrutiny of 1344, and his last office was held in 1371.
  • [b] George Bent (1993, p. 216n88) notes that Tellino's donation had to have been made prior to his chapel's consecration on All Saints Day in 1364.
  • [c] The altarpiece's inscription named Tellino di Dino as patron and gave the date as 1365. It remained in its chapel until 1810.
  • [d] There is little reason to doubt that Tellino was buried in the tomb that carried his name.
