da Vinci, Leonardo di S. Piero di Antonio di S. Piero di S. Guido (da Firenze)

Description

Leonardo da Vinci was the illegitimate son of the notary ser Perio d'Antonio da Vinci and an otherwise unknown woman named Caterina, who married Acattabriga di Piero del Vacca soon after her son's birth. Leonardo's illegitimacy is noted in several documents, including his grandfather's 1458 catasto declaration, and the declaration of his heirs in 1469 "figliuolo di detto ser Pero non legiptimo." Ser Piero never took the legal steps to legitimize his first-born son, nor did he draw up a will despite his long career as a notary. Leonardo was thus left out of the inheritance of his intestate father, a matter that led to a drawn-out dispute with his half-brothers.
