Notes

  • [a] Bice's husband and his fourth cousin messer Francesco di M. Pazzino Pazzi installed a free-standing tomb in the south cloister of Santa Croce. Oddly, the inscription on the casket stipulates that it is for the use of only the heirs of messer Francesco, and the womens' tomb underneath also stipulated that it was for the female relations of Francesco. When Michele, son of messer Simone, installed a third tomb beside the other two, it was to service the heirs of his father. While Simone's corpse was presumably placed in the casket of the arca that carries his name, Bice and their sons would not have been allowed to use it or the accompanying women's tomb. Thus, it seems most likely that Bice herself was placed in the tomb installed by her son Michele. She wrote her will in 1343, which could clarify her burial wishes, if the document still exists.
