  • [a] The original 1439 Santa Croce sepoltuario is not illustrated. The entry for this tomb, no. 41, states that it was for the Biliotti "di la dal aqua" (sic, fol. 8), that is, beyond the water. The Biliotti Volpi family lived across the Arno river, and a 1596 copy of the original register includes a drawing of their coat of arms (a red shield with a silver cap carrying a walking red fox). The Oltrarno Biliotti had chapels and tombs in both the old and new churches of Santo Spirito, and it is not clear who would have commissioned or used the Santa Croce tomb, when others were closer at hand in the neighborhood.
