Alessandro Gianfigliazzi canon of the Florentine church, vicar of the bishop of Fiesole, the most vigilant governor of this distinguished foundling hospital lies here in peace. He was in charge of the common good for a period of twenty-two years with the highest praise for him. He restored, enlarged, and extended its estate and its output. He ennobled the sanctuary with splendid furniture, the walls of the vaults of the church to decorate. He distributed single beds for the children. With justice, loyalty, faith, honesty, discretion and incredible kindess for all, he merited the benevolence of the great princes of Tuscany, the praise of great men, the abundant tears and love of the poor at the funeral. On account of the illustrious merits of such a protector, none of which are about to be destroyed by the forgetfulness of time, the wards of this same foundling hospital placed this tomb for their most loving and kind father. He died on the fifth day before the ides of April in the year 1742, his age 63.
1937 Alexand: Gianf. O.H.S.S. The bones of Alessandro Gianfigliazzi have been placed here.

Notes

  • [] The words "Alexander Gianfigliazius," "brephotrophii," and "alumni" are all carved in larger capitals
  • [a] Alessandro Gianfigliazzi, the last hospital administrator to be honored with a monument in the Innocenti church, had a wall monument on the left side of the chancel and a smaller marker in the floor. All that survives of the wall monument is the large stone inscription plaque.
  • [b] Though the inscription still exists, it was moved to a small area behind the altar and thus not particularly visible or honorable.
