Notes

  • [] The inscription has suffered significant losses. See Dillian Gordon (2022, p. 201) for discussion of its discovery, conservation, and reconstruction. The lacunae in square brackets are based on Gordon, while extant letters are based on the surviving portions of the inscription.
  • [a] The two registers kept by the monks have slightly different dates for the foundation and completion of the chapel. The new infirmary off which it opened was begun in 1386. Several benefactors provided funds for the new infirmary, including the widow of Nerone Stoldi, who also made provisions for a new chapel upon the death of her stepson Federigo, who died on September 4th, 1383.
  • [b] According to the National Gallery London, the altarpiece was moved to the church of San Giovanni Decollato in Sasso, which had joined the Camaldolese congregation in 1414. This may explain why Rosselli and Richa make no mention of the Stoldi chapel.
  • [c] Mona Agnola's bequest would not go into effect until after the death of Federigo di Neroni Stoldi, who died on September 4th, 1383.
  • [d] The inscription on the altarpiece notes that it was commissioned by don Filippo di Nerone for the benefit of his mother Mona Agnola's soul. The altarpiece was moved in the fifteenth century to a Camaldolese church outside of Arezzo.
