Object genre that includes two-dimensional works. Examples would be in the media of painting, drawing, photography, film, digital formats, bas-relief, or other media. In usage, the term does not necessarily imply that the work is representational, but instead refers to the two dimensionality of the work, including abstract works. However, it excludes purely decorative details; for example, a faux-marble painted, decorative wall panel is not considered a picture. To particularly designate works that represent the visible world, use "depictions(visual works)" or "representation (form of expression)." In historical usage, "pictures" was typically reserved for paintings; in modern usage, use "paintings (visual works)" to designate paintings in particular.
