The complex of Santa Maria del Carmine was continuously inhabited by a community of Carmelite friars, and thus can be more specifically described as a friary, housing a community of men who focused on the sacred ministry of preaching, moving from place to place and professing poverty (in contrast to monks). Mendicant friaries are also sometimes referred to as "convents," though in English this term is typically reserved for female communities.
