Notes

  • [a] Not to be confused with the male monastery north of the river in today's via degli Alfani, the female convent also known as Santa Maria degli Angeli formerly stood catty-corner from the parish church of San Frediano and backed up to the lungarno. Stefano Rosselli's description of the institution is brief, included primarily because it was the religious home of Santa Maria Maddalena de'Pazzi. Her community later moved to the Monastero di Cestello in Borgo Pinti on the other side of the river, switching houses with the Cistercians who came to reside in the Oltrarno convent.
  • [b] According to Rosselli, the convent was founded around 1460 in a house purchased by padre Fra Niccolò Siciliano Carmelitano who vested a number of noblewomen with the Carmelite habit, including Lisa, widow of Niccolò Serragli
  • [c] The Carmelite nuns of S. Maria degli Angeli were sent to the monastery known as Cestello in Borgo Pinti, while the Cistercian monks living there came to reside in the Oltrarno. After swapping houses, the Cistercians went on to rebuilt the church, which came to be known as Cestello Nuovo.
  • [d] After the church was reconstructed and reoriented to face the Arno, it was renamed Cestello Nuovo.
  • [e] The Carmelite nuns of S. Maria swapped houses with the Cistercian monks in Borgo Pinti.
