Originally home to a group of Celestine monks, this monastic complex was initially known as S. Piero del Murrone after the order's founder. The name changed in 1552 when a group of Jerusalem nuns took up residence and renamed their convent San Giovannino in memory of the previous two houses they had occupied and their order's patron saint, John the Baptist. To distinguish it from other churches by the same name, some sources, including Stefano Rosselli's sepoltuario, refer to it as San Giovannino in via San Gallo after the street over which it stands. More commonly it is known as San Giovannino dei Cavalieri after the Knights Hospitaller, parent order of the nuns.
