S. Gallo

A church dedicated to the hermit monk San Gallo (St. Gall) is known to have existed since 1218, giving its name to the nearby Porta and via San Gallo. It formerly stood in the area now occupied by the Piazza della Libertà. It was attached to a small pilgrims' hospital endowed by Guidalotto di Volto dell'Orco and his wife Bernardesca. By the 15th century the church was run by Augustinian Hermits and known for sermons by humanist Fra Mariano da Gennazzano, Savonarola 's adversary. Lorenzo de' Medici hired architect Giuliano Giamberti to expand the church and build a monastery next to it. According to Vasari, Lorenzo was so impressed that he nicknamed Giuliano "il Sangallo." Various members of the Giamberti also used the name da Sangallo.
