The parish church of Santo Stefano al Ponte was in central Florence among the houses of the oldest and noble families like the Buondelmonti, Gherardini, Girolami, Lamberteschi, Baldovinetti, Rigaletti, and others. Because of its importance, it was named as one of 12 priories among the original 48 parishes established at the start of the commune. According to Stefano Rosselli, the church was significantly redone and it seems at this time a number of memorials of older families were lost. Rosselli laments that the friars in charge of the church did not have good records of earlier tombs and chapels. He instead takes his information from a sepoltuario drawn up in 1607 by Francesco della Foresta (ASFi, Manoscritti, 628, pp. 138–58).
