The epitaph erected to honor the burial of the historian Benedetto Varchi at Santa Maria degli Angeli as recorded in various sources is confusing with respect to the known facts of Varchi's life. Unfortunately, Stefano Rosselli inadvertently copied Varchi's age as LIII (53), which was corrected by Giuseppe Richa as LXIII (63), thus matching Varchi's birth and death years, and corresponding to the fact that he died in his sixty-third year at age 62 and 9 months. Moreover, the date on the tomb refers to its installation, rather than his death. He was initially buried on December 21st 1565 in a simple grave, and his tomb marker was installed eleven months later.
