For Benedetto Varchi poet, philosopher, and historian, who, because he had happily lived 63 years with the greatest freedom of the mind without any meanness and ambition, died not unwilling. On the 16th Kalends of December 1566 [November 19th], Silvano Razzi of this sacred monastic church took care that this [tombstone] be placed for his best friend.

Notes

  • [] Stefano Rosselli errantly recorded Varchi's years as LIII (53), correctly transcribed as LXIII (63) by Giusppe Richa and confirmed by the monument. Varchi was in his sixty-third year at his death in November 1565. Rosselli's error is understandable given that the X is smaller than the other letters, tucked between the ascender of the L and first I.
  • [a] The date on the tomb refers to its installation and not the death of Varchi, which occurred during the night of December 19/20, 1565. According to gravedigger records, he was buried at the Angeli on December 21st, 1565. His marker was installed in by his friend Abbot Silvano Razzi eleven months later on November 19th, 1566, the date recorded on the tombstone. It was still in the church pavement in the middle of the church when Stefano Rosselli and Giuseppe Richa described it.
  • [b] As often happened in Florentine churches, Benedetto Varchi was buried in a temporary, simple grave. Whether the marker installed eleven months later covered this spot or his bones were translated to the new church monument is not clear in the sources.
  • [c] A new plaque, in the chiostro dei Morti at Santa Maria degli Angeli, was installed in 1871 when memorials were removed from the church.
