Quaratesi, Sandro di Simone (da Quarata)

Description

Among the most prominent members of his family (Brucker, 1962, p. 30n116), Sandro di Simone da Quarata served in public office from 1343 through 1370, the year in which he was murdered, seemingly for his high position within the Ricci faction. According to Brucker (pp. 199-200), assassins had been hired by one Jacopo di Federigo, seemingly a member of, or at least sympathetic to, the opposing Albizzi faction, to hide in a house near Santo Spirito lying in wait for Sandro after mass.

Notes

  • [a] Guido Monaldi recorded Sandro da Quarata's death in his diary as occurring on October 21, 1370, while Gene Brucker indicates the crime happened in November, though he may be referring to the trial of Sandro's killers, convicted in absentia.
  • [b] After the fall of the Duke of Athens, election rules were reorganized to allow twelve priors with four chosen from among the "grandi," and the remaining eight from the "popolani," but the magnate priors were expelled from the city on September 22nd, at or after which time Sandro switched from the office of Prior to Standard-bearer of Justice.
  • [c] According to the Priorista Mariani, Sandro completed the term of messer Donato Velluti who died after serving only one day in office, having been elected on June 28th.
  • [d] Simone di Sandro is indexed by the surnames Quaratesi and daQuarata
