Notes

  • [a] A notice in the Provvisioni records that on 12 April 1382 the Priors, Standardbearer of Justice, and Twelve Buonomini authorized a funeral for ser Anselmo da Città di Castello, who had died the previous January while serving the Signoria as captain of its attendants (capitaneus famile offitii), an office referred to in the sepoltuari as Capitano de Fanti. However, because of "agitation and unrest" (rumores et tumulti) in Florence at the time of ser Anselmo's death, the government had been unable to honor him properly. The magistrates thus authorized the use of the arms of the Florentine people and an expenditure of 25 gold florins on the belated ceremony. ASFi, Provvisioni, reg. 71 (1382 Apr. 12–1383 Mar. 18), fol. 11r.
  • [b] While the government of Florence authorized a public state funeral on 12 April 1382, there is no mention in the decree of paying for a tomb, thus suggesting that ser Anselmo had already secured his burial location at Santa Croce. Given that his tomb had disappeared by the compilation of the 1596 sepoltuario, the slab was possibly removed in conjunction with Vasari's removal of the tramezzo and renovation of the church, or it could have been transferred earlier to another patron at any time between 1440 and 1596, which would have removed any reference to ser Anselmo.
