Notes

  • [a] The sepoltuario of 1439 states that ser Anselmo's gravesite remained unadorned (ammattonata), but the 1596 transcription of this earlier register indicates it had been given a marble slab.
  • [b] While the government of Florence authorized a public state funeral on 12 April 1382, there is no mention in the decree of paying for a tomb, thus suggesting that ser Anselmo had already secured his burial location at Santa Croce. Given that his tomb had disappeared by the compilation of the 1596 sepoltuario, the slab was possibly removed in conjunction with Vasari's removal of the tramezzo and renovation of the church, or it could have been transferred earlier to another patron at any time between 1440 and 1596, which would have removed any reference to ser Anselmo.
