Alamanni, Alamanno (barone tedesco)

Description

The patronyms provided for Alamanno Alamanni, Benincasa di Giannella di Azzolino di Rinieri, come from a tree in the Carte Mariani Dei that may not be trustworthy. Luigi Passerini names him as the capostipite of the Alamanni family without an ancestral line, but does note that he was a German baron who came to Italy in the company of emperor Federigo Barbarossa in the 1150s. This information comes from a document dated 1357 stating that Neri di Bonagiunta Alamanni was the descendant of Ghibellines. Another document dated 1197 mentions his son Albertino suggesting a German origin for his father. Passerini vehemently refutes Eugenio Gamurrini's theory that the Alamanni were of Italian, not German, origin.
