Translation

For Benedetto Varchi poet, philosopher, and historian, who, because he had happily lived 63 years with the greatest freedom of the mind without any meanness and ambition, died not unwilling. On the 16th Kalends of December 1566 [November 19th], Silvano Razzi of this sacred monastic church took care that this [tombstone] be placed for his best friend.

Notes

  • [a] Stefano Rosselli errantly recorded Varchi's years as LIII (53), correctly transcribed as LXIII (63) by Giusppe Richa. Varchi was in his sixty-third year at his death in November 1565.
