Deo Optimo Maximo. Benedicto Varchio poetae philosofo atque historico quicum annos LXIII summa animi libertate sine ulla avaritia aut ambitione iucunde vixisset obiit non invitus. XVI Kalendas Decembris MDLXVI Silvanus Ractius sacrae huius aedis coenobita amico optimo ponendum curavit.
To God, the most good, the most great. For Benedetto Varchi poet, philosopher, and historian, who, because he had happily lived 63 years with the greatest freedom of the mind without any meanness and ambition, died not unwilling. On the 16th Kalends of December 1566 [November 19th], Silvano Razzi of this sacred monastic church took care that this [tombstone] be placed for his best friend.
