Translation

To God, the most good, the most great. For Benedetto Varchi poet, philosopher, and historian, who, because he had happily lived 63 years with the greatest freedom of the mind without any meanness and ambition, died not unwilling. On the 16th Kalends of December 1566 [November 19th], Silvano Razzi of this sacred monastic church took care that this [tombstone] be placed for his best friend.

Notes

  • [a] Stefano Rosselli errantly recorded Varchi's years as LIII (53), correctly transcribed as LXIII (63) by Giusppe Richa and confirmed by the monument. Varchi was in his sixty-third year at his death in November 1565. Rosselli's error is understandable given that the X is smaller than the other letters, tucked between the ascender of the L and first I.
