Notes

  • [a] Patriarch Gastone della Torre da Milano died in Florence in the house of the Barucci in 1318. The monument ordered for him included a rectangular coffin or chest with narrative reliefs showing the Resurrection of Christ flanked by Doubting Thomas on the left and the Noli me tangere on the right. Other elements, including the della Torre arms and a canopy, caryatid figures, and additional narrative figures have been dispersed or lost. The Barucci family arms were included on the brackets supporting the casket. Both Valentiner and Kreytenberg have proposed reconstructions of the original monument prior to its removal to the cloister to allow for the late-sixteenth-century installation of a new altar for the Serristori, who had already had a floor tomb in place since 1400.
  • [b] recumbent portrait of patriarch
  • [c] The Patriarch died in the Barucci family home, so their arms displayed on the supports of his tomb.
