[a] Several men named Giovanni appear in the Siminetti family tree in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. Why this Giovanni chose not to include his father's name on his tomb is difficult to surmise. It is possible that the 1439 sepoltuario was not recording an inscription but merely ownership, and that the lost stone did provide a patronym and thus easier recognition of its honoree.
