Notes

  • [] This inscription, indicating the honoree as Francesco di Ventura di Jacopo, has been copied variously in the sources, none of which correspond exactly to the letters as they appear on the stone marker. The spelling of Francesco's name on the stone is peculiar. It is unclear whether the stone carver has rendered the inscription partly in Italian and partly in Latin or simply poor or peculiar Latin (The tomb for Francesco from Ventura of Jacopo and of his own). A typical construction would use all genitives and read S. Franceschi Venturae Iacopi et suorum, which is how the inscription was written in the 1596 copy of the Santa Croce sepoltuario and Stefano Rosselli, leading one to question whether those authors were looking at the marker itself, or copying older books.
