Notes

  • [a] Though the ASFi Rosselli copyist (likely Giovanni Battista Dei) recorded a date of 1284 in his transcription of Benegrande's tomb inscription, an eighteenth-century publication Pisa illustrata indicates that he lived in the fourteenth century, and that the partial inscription reading "an. MCC. die X. Aprilis" referred to 1384 instead. Further proof of this fact is that he was a sindaco for the Pisa comune in 1370, and that he was part of the peace between the Pisans and Emperor Charles IV of Luxembourg (r. 1355–78).
  • [b] The tomb was recorded in 1793 by Alessandro da Morrona in his Pisa illustrata.
