Notes

  • [a] The architrave over the main door from the street into a courtyard in front of the church of Santa Verdiana carried three coats of arms: the cross of the Popolo, the lily of Florence, and the dragon-clutching eagle of the Parte Guelfa. These three emblems signaled that the city was responsible for the care of the convent since its founder ser Niccolò di Manetto da Castelfiorentino had no male heirs.
