Notes

  • [a] As Stefano Rosselli and Giuseppe Richa noted, this plaque carries an error either of the identity of the pope or the date of consecration. Pelagius I reigned from 556 to 561 while Pelagius II was pope in the year 580. Neither was canonized, raising questions about the abbreviation that begins the inscription. Moreover, also noticed in the sources, the style of the lettering and carving are later Renaissance, suggesting that it was in 1580, the millennial anniversary of the consecration, that the plaque was carved and installed.
