Notes

  • [] Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze, Inv. 1890 nn. 8651 e 8653 via Accademia online
  • [a] According to Raffaello Borghini, this altar stood against the west wall of the church opposite the high altar. He describes the altarpiece in great detail, allowing an identification of the Crucifixion triptych by Filippino Lippi, whose central panel had a gold ground and was destroyed in 1945 during World War II. The side panels showing St. John the Baptist and Mary Magdalene are now in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence. When the church was reoriented in 1622, this altar was refurbished to serve as the new high altar, and Filippino Lippi's painting remained in place. A new altar for the Valori was installed on the south wall to the left of the Salviati-Capponi family and to the right of the new main door overlooking via de' Giraldi.
  • [b] According to the Galleria dell'Accademia, the altarpiece was likely commissioned by Niccolò Valori to adorn his uncle Francesco's altar, both fervent followers of Savanarola.
  • [c] The Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze indicates that Francesco Valori founded the chapel in honor of his name saint, but does not say when. Given its absence in the 1445 inventory of chapels, (CRS, 78: 386, fol. xxxiiii) it must have occurred between midcentury and his death in 1498.
  • [d] The Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze proposes that Niccolò commissioned the altarpiece for his uncle Francesco's chapel. They date the painting to 1498, which would mean he commissioned it just before his death in April or via his testament.
  • [e] The altar was founded by Francesco Valori in honor of Saint Francis at some point after 1445, for it does not appear in the inventory of chapels kept in the records of the Badia Fiorentina (78: 386, fol. xxxiiii). His nephew Niccolò commissioned Filippino Lippi to paint its altarpiece around 1498, the year in which his uncle died.
