Notes

  • [a] Though the altarpiece was lost, Giuseppe Richa nevertheless recounted its removal from the high altar to the sacristy and described its scenes from the life of Saint Bartholomew as painted in what he called “the most extravagant manner” (stravagante modo), characteristic of the “barbarous times” (tempi barbari). He may be describing a late thirteenth- or early fourteenth-century altarpiece, similar to the Santa Cecilia e storie della sua vita, formerly in the Florentine church of Santa Cecilia and now in the Uffizi.
  • [b] During renovations to the church, the original altarpiece, possibly paid for by the Macci family, was removed to the sacristy. Giuseppe Richa describes it in the seventh volume of his Chiese fiorentine (1758), but it had been lost by the time of his writing.
  • [c] Given that the Macci family held rights to the high altar, they may have been responsible for commissioning the altarpiece.
