[a] Stefano Orlandi (Memorie domenicane 1947, p. 36), cited by Giurescu, mistakenly attributed the patronage of the Peter Martyr altar to "Durante de' Catellini di Castiglione and the brothers of Tieri Dietisalvi." Giurescu correctly identified M. Durante and Tieri as brothers, the sons of Diotisalvi da Castiglione, but was understandably confused by Orlandi's account. The notes of Luigi Passerini (186, ins. 89) and monograph by J. Wood Brown (1902, p. 120) make clear that M. Durante commissioned the chapel with his nephews, the unnamed sons of Tieri. They paid Fra Borghese, master of works at Santa Maria Novella, in 1298.
[b] Brown and Giurescu cite documentary evidence that Bernardo Castiglioni restored the altar and tomb in 1484.
[c] The da Castiglione altar was torn down with the removal of the rood screen.
[d] Luigi Passerini cites a Castiglioni family book that notes payment in 1298 for the Peter Martyr chapel by M. Durante and the unnamed sons of Tieri. A family tree in the Carte Pucci show Durante and Tieri to be the sons of Diotisalvi. It is assumed that all of Durante's nephews listed in the Carte Pucci tree were co-patrons with their uncle.
[e] According to a Castiglioni family book cited by Passerini, the Peter Martyr chapel was paid for by messer Durante di Diotisalvi and the unnamed sons of his brother Tieri, of which Guido was one.
[f] According to a Castiglioni family book cited by Passerini, the Peter Martyr chapel was paid for by messer Durante di Diotisalvi and the unnamed sons of his brother Tieri, of which Diotisalvi was one.
[g] According to a Castiglioni family book cited by Passerini, the Peter Martyr chapel was paid for in 1298 by messer Durante di Diotisalvi and the unnamed sons of his brother Tieri, of which Piero was one. He joined the friary six years later.
[h] According to a Castiglioni family book cited by Passerini, the Peter Martyr chapel was paid for by messer Durante di Diotisalvi and the unnamed sons of his brother Tieri, of which Taddeo was one.
