Continuously inhabited by Benedictine monks, the Badia of Florence can more specifically be identified as a monastery, which is a built complex for religious retirement or seclusion from the world for monks, who are people living a celibate life according to the rule of a particular religious order and adhering to vows, especially of poverty, chastity, and obedience. The Badia also administered the parish of Santo Stefano alla Badia given that the small church of Santo Stefano was a chapel within its monastic enclosure.
